With the calling from the drums, KanKouran West African Dance Company’s Annual African dance and drum conference, ushers in a NATIONAL CONVERGENCE of West Africa’s finest dancers and musicians. Hundreds of professional artists, dance companies, youth organizations, and dance/drum enthusiasts come from the United States, Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and Africa to partake in three days of dancing and drumming instruction from the best trainers available. More than 20 workshop presenters from the U.S., Senegal, Guinea, Mali, the Congo and Liberia teach techniques perfected through years of experience, study, and research. Conference workshops cater to a variety of dance styles. Instructors are prepared to work with beginners as well as advanced participants.
The annual conference takes place at the Washington Plaza Hotel, located at 10 Thomas Circle, NW, Washington, D.C. As part of the annual conference, KanKouran also performs its annual, full-concert production. Through these full-length productions, Assane Konte, co-founder and Artistic Director of KanKouran West African Dance Company, has staged authentic glimpses of the peoples and cultures of Africa for the last 30 years.
The concert takes place at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, located at 730 21st Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
KanKouran’s annual conference and concert are always the “can’t miss” events of the year!
